New NFT art series by Shinji Murakami, designed to create social impact and promote diversity in the Metaverse, produced by ONBD.

About

MetaPeople is a collectible artwork series by artist Shinji Murakami. The inspiration behind the series is to promote an inclusive and diverse Metaverse. Populating Web 3 with minority groups who are too often underrepresented in media and in the marketplace gives all of us characters and avatars that we can identify with. Each artwork is original and designed and digitally painted by Shinji. The inaugural set of artworks will be the Asian Edition: a set of 151 unique NFTs, the number inspired by the original number of Pokemon characters.

For this inaugural edition, and for ONE MONTH ONLY, collectors who hold any 2 characters in their wallet can ask Shinji to create a new unique NFT of those specific characters holding hands – a ‘couple’ – completely free of charge. These MetaPeople couples will be delivered within one month of the initial request.

‍The same pair of characters can only become a couple once. We will post each couple on this website after they are created so that collectors are aware of which couple combinations are still available.

MetaPeople Black Lives Matter edition and LGBTQ edition will be released later in 2022. For a limited time after each subsequent MetaPeople release, collectors will once again be able to request couples to made by Shinji. However as each couple is specially designed and digitally hand-crafted by the artist, couples will not always be free of charge - priority will be given to OG MetaPeople holders!

For all editions a portion of the proceeds going toward organizations supporting Stop AAPI Hate, Black Lives Matter, LGBTQ rights, and others.

How It Started

For the last 7 years Shinji has been creating 8-bit versions of people, starting with his Marilyn sculpture realized in 2015. In 2018 he created a simplified version of his humanoid figures, Adam and Eve, holding hands. This artwork inspired more artworks - Mario and the Princess, Daft Punk, and Biden and Trump - and now, they have evolved into Shinji's MetaPeople, a collection of NFTs that the artist envisions as a participatory, social experiential artwork.

In response to the recent events of racial injustice against Black, Brown and Asian communities, the artist also wants this project to focus upon a message and vision of a shared humanity. Shinji’s first set of MetaPeople is entitled the “Asian Edition”. Shinji has created 151 characters that celebrate the diversity of who and what we consider to be Asian, and offer support for the AAPI community. Future editions will support Black LivesMatter, the LGBTQ community, and other underrepresented communities. Proceeds from every sale will go toward organizations that create social impact for these minority groups.
